Robert Ferrin Bio ImgRobert Ferrin, Assistant Director for Parking Services, Columbus, Ohio, oversees the administration, enforcement, operations, and management of public parking for the City of Columbus.

In June 2019 he was elected to the International Parking and Mobility Institute (IPMI) Board of Directors. Robert moved to Columbus in late 2017 from Colorado, where he spent nearly seven years working in various parking leadership roles with the City and County of Denver as their Manager of On-Street Programs and the City of Aurora as their Parking & Mobility Manager. Robert is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he earned a Bachelor and Master of Geography degrees.

Pivoting our Conference & Expo to a Virtual Event

 

Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our members, partners, and employees. During the last few weeks, we have been closely monitoring the evolving situation with the COVID-19 outbreak to ensure we are taking every precaution to look after our community. After careful consideration, we’ve decided there will be no physical event for the 2020 IPMI Conference & Expo. Instead, we will reimagine the 2020 IPMI Conference & Expo as a virtual experience.

Tentatively scheduled for June 1 – 2, 2020, the IPMI Virtual Parking & Mobility Conference & Expo will deliver the education that is the hallmark of our association to you, wherever you are. In the coming weeks, we will release the comprehensive education program, online networking, and virtual Expo.

We are working to get the information you need as quickly as possible. Our Conference team is in the process of finalizing plans and will launch an FAQ page for attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors, addressing registration for the virtual event and all refund options. Our team will be in touch with you on or before April 10, 2020.

Few industries pull together to support their community like ours, and we thank you for your confidence in the weeks and months ahead. In the interim, IPMI will host free online industry-specific Shoptalks addressing the COVID-19 crisis and the industry response beginning this Tuesday, March 24 and continuing March 31, with additional resources to come. These will be offered live and recorded to share with those who can’t attend; click here to pre-register.

Member News: Park Assist has been Chosen to Upgrade Parking for Salmaniya Medical Complex

MANAMA, BAHRAIN – April 8th, 2020 – Park Assist® has been awarded the Parking Guidance System (PGS) contract for Salmaniya Medical Complex’s new carpark development, located in the Salmaniya district of Manama in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Owned by Edamah (the Real Estate investment arm of the Bahrain Government) and operated by Bahrain Carparks, the facility will serve one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the country. This installation will be the second project with Edamah and the third PGS deployment in Bahrain, all of which are Park Assist systems.

Due to Park Assist’s previous success at “The Terminal” in Adliya, Edamah chose to implement Park Assist’s parking guidance technology at this groundbreaking carpark as well. Equipped with Park Assist’s camera based M4 PGS, this new facility aims to provide the Salmaniya Medical Complex community with a sustainable parking facility that will both relieve congestion and facilitate a smooth flow of steady traffic.

Park Assist’s exclusive M4 PGS will be used to help quickly and seamlessly steer visitors to available parking spaces. Upon entry, the patented, camera-based technology guides parkers using color-coded smart-sensors. The smart-sensor’s LED lights are triggered to change from red to green when spaces become available, allowing visitors to pinpoint exactly where to park, saving them valuable time and providing a more efficient parking journey.

Member News: JTA, Beep & NAVYA Autonomous Shuttles Help Transport COVID-19 Tests Collected at Mayo Clinic Drive-Thru Site in Jacksonville

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), Beep Inc. and NAVYA partner with Mayo Clinic to safely transport COVID-19 samples on their Jacksonville Campus

JACKSONVILLE, (APRIL 2, 2020) – For the first time in the United States, autonomous AV Mayo Jeep COVID 19 support News 040220vehicles are being used to transport medical supplies and COVID-19 tests at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

At a time when healthcare resources and personnel are stretched thin, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has partnered with Beep and NAVYA to use autonomous vehicles to facilitate the safe transport of COVID-19 tests collected at a drive-thru testing location at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

“This deployment is a historic moment for the Jacksonville Transportation Authority,” said JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr.  “Along with our partners Beep, NAVYA and Mayo Clinic, we are leveraging our learnings from three years of testing autonomous vehicles through our Ultimate Urban Circulator program. Our innovative team saw this as an opportunity to use technology to respond to this crisis in Northeast Florida and increase the safety of COVID-19 testing.”

On Monday, March 30, 2020, up to four autonomous vehicles began operating along an initial route, in full autonomous mode without attendants or other people onboard, to transport COVID-19 tests from a drive-thru testing site to a processing laboratory on Mayo Clinic campus.  The COVID-19 test samples are placed in secure containers prior to Mayo Clinic healthcare professionals loading the samples onto the shuttle.

“During a time of rapid change and uncertainty, the ability to think innovatively alongside the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, NAVYA, and Beep during the pandemic has strengthened all of our teams through community collaboration,” said Kent Thielen, M.D., CEO, Mayo Clinic in Florida. “Using artificial intelligence enables us to protect staff from exposure to this contagious virus by using cutting edge autonomous vehicle technology, and frees up staff time that can be dedicated to direct treatment and care for patients. We are grateful to JTA, Beep, and NAVYA for their partnership in these challenging times.”

The JTA, Beep, NAVYA and Bestmile teams partnered to create, test and deploy the routes for the autonomous vehicles at Mayo Clinic in Florida to address the fluid developments of the COVID-19 pandemic. The routes are isolated from pedestrians, traffic and staff. Beep, Mayo Clinic and the JTA will closely monitor the service from a mobile command center to maintain safe operation.

Beep, an autonomous shuttle fleet service provider, transported the shuttles through Eagle Express Inc. from Lake Nona, Florida, an innovation hub 150 miles away where the company is headquartered in Orlando, Florida. An additional shuttle is being utilized from the JTA’s Ultimate Urban Circulator (U2C) program. The JTA has actively tested AV technology since 2017 to prepare for a conversion and expansion of its Skyway automated people mover in Downtown Jacksonville into a network powered by autonomous vehicles.

“The opportunity to work together with these organizations in an effort to provide a dedicated COVID-19 testing solution represents our goal as a company, and that’s to create a more accessible solution in the moments that matter, whether that be crisis, shortage in manpower and resources, or other areas we can provide aid in,” said Étienne Hermite, CEO of NAVYA.

The use of the autonomous vehicles to safely transport and handle the COVID-19 samples is another example how these vehicles can be repurposed in times of need. #

A Discussion About Curb Management

Not since the 1930s has curbside management (formerly known as on-street parking) received so much attention among the transportation industry (and the public!). With cities far and wide densifying and becoming the centers of population activity, city transportation officials are looking at ways to optimize not only multi-modal mobility (via increased diverse transportation investments), but also multi-modal accessibility. Regardless of mode, both people and goods meet on the city’s curb. Left unchecked, cities face ramifications from the obvious (congestion, safety implications) to the abstract (vulnerabilities to climate change, health expectancies). It becomes imperative for municipalities, large and small, to come to terms with the need for multi-modal curbside management.

However, what is curbside management? Depending on the perspective, the term can have varying definitions. Common between them is that curbside management involves the nexus point between the roadway and the pedestrian realm. It is in this space where people and goods transact. In older cities, regulations were enacted to manage horses and carriage access and the maintenance of that nexus space (see Washington, D.C.’s Parking Acts from the late 19th century). In the early 20th century after the advent of the automobile, technology innovation to manage the curbside led to the advent of the parking meter in 1935 and its subsequent proliferation in cities far and wide since then.

Today, technology disruptions in mobility have led to the rise of transportation network companies, connected/autonomous vehicles, expansion of mass transportation services, and on-demand delivery (as a result of on-line commerce). Because of this disruption paired with densifying cities, the curbside demand has diversified and intensified. Gone are the days of facilitating the curb for vehicle storage. Today is the day to facilitate the optimization of people and goods movement.

The IPMI Research & Innovation Task Force is offering a blog post series to help demystify the approach to implementing curb lane management strategies for the industry. The blog series will present a common model for implementing curb management:

Supporting Mobility in an Open Environment

Next Wednesday, I’ll have the pleasure of presenting an IPMI webinar: Supporting Mobility In An Open Environment. Mobility is a rapidly evolving discipline within the urban planning and parking fields, and I hope to inspire a conversation about how we can do a better job of promoting it in a way that fully benefits everyone.

When it comes to mobility, the future has already arrived. You just need to know where to look. Parking and transportation professionals around the globe are seeking new ways to promote mobility and apply planning approaches and new technologies to their mobility challenges. We can learn much by looking to the experiences of experts, planners, and parking professionals in other parts of the world—the challenges they face and the strategies and tools they are using to overcome those challenges.

How do we apply technology to help people get to their destinations more freely and conveniently? What are the most exciting technologies, particularly apps, for promoting mobility? How do we make these technologies integral to the lives of commuters and travelers, without risking app fatigue or burnout? These are all questions that are being grappled with around the globe, and many communities and parking organizations have come up with some pretty good ideas. What can we learn from parking professionals in other parts of the world who have addressed these very issues?

Amy Hunter, GISP is responsible for GIS field data collection, analyses, and deliverables, as well as being a certified Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) and FWC Authorized Gopher Tortoise Agent. Amy has project experience with state, county, municipal, and private clients, including the creation of mobile applications for data collection; development of maps for field review, reporting, and permitting; and clients to provide geospatial and tabular data. She also provides the design of geodatabases, and reviews of GIS data/reporting.

 

 

Paul Stresow, is the Assistant Director with the City of El Paso’s International Bridges Department, where he manages three of the community’s international ports of entry. He has been involved in solving parking and transportation issues for over 20 years, including 8 years as Parking and Transportation Director at The University of Texas at El Paso. Paul serves on the Board of The Texas Parking and Transportation Association, where he serves as a Co-Chair to the Education and Roundtables Committee.
