This course is about the development and introduction of new technology in all aspects of our lives that are happening at a pace never experienced before. This is certainly true in how we manage and conduct business in the parking and mobility sector. In this session we will discuss new and emerging technologies, the associated advantages and disadvantages, factors to be determined when considering implementing technology, and what constitutes a successful implementation. This aligns with content in Domain VI of the CAPP Exam Content Outline.

At the completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Evaluate new technology to become a ‘smart consumer’.
  • Recite your business model including how new technology fits into your organization.
  • Determine a need before selecting a solution.
  • Craft an effective plan for the consideration and implementation of technology.

Last year brought discussions of campus closures, telelearning, and teleworking. Within a week, these discussions were reality. When the awareness that this COVID thing would last longer than a few weeks, we started to look at how the lull could be used to keep the momentum of teleworking going as a demand-reduction tool.

To address all the issues for making teleworking an ongoing mobility strategy, we created a telework committee. Stakeholders from human resources, technology, safety and ergonomics, employee/union relations, communications, and finance. Transportation Services coordinates the committee, which will address the physical, legal, supervisory, and training issues and keep teleworking a viable mobility option into the future.

  • Illustrate how teleworking is a mobility advantage.
  • Recognize the institutional needs of a teleworking program.
  • Detail best practices and measure the effectiveness of amnesty and relief programs for constituents and revenue recovery efforts.

Ramon Zavala, Transportation Demand Manager, UC Davis Transportation Services

Ramon Zavala holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from UC Irvine, where he began his work in transportation demand management. After seven years with UCI’s Transportation department, he transferred to UC Davis’ Transportation Services, where he manages the TDM program, transit relations, and overseeing the overseeing the bicycle program.

Member News: Nashville International Airport Chooses Park Assist

ParkAssist News 2020 06 26 Nashville international AirportNASHVILLE, TN – June 25th, 2020 – Park Assist® has been awarded the Parking Guidance System (PGS) contract for Nashville International Airport (BNA). As one of the fastest-growing airports, BNA’s increased traffic and added service have created a demand for a new parking solution that can handle a heavy volume of travelers. Park Assist’s M4 smart-sensor system was built to improve both garage efficiency and customer satisfaction, as such BNA elected to install this PGS in two of its garages. Park Assist’s first installation is complete and the second project is underway.

After a competitive RFP process to secure the most qualified PGS vendor, Park Assist was awarded the opportunity to be part of BNA’s continued expansion by adding the latest parking technology to its garages. Park Assist’s proprietary M4 PGS and digital wayfinding signage offer BNA visitors advanced guidance from entry to exit. The color-coded M4 smart-sensor system seamlessly guides parkers through the facility to vacant spaces using red and green lights to indicate occupancy, guaranteeing reduced search and park times, and decreased traffic.

This installation will also include several of Park Assist’s advanced software add-ons, such as Find Your CarPark Alerts, and Park Surveillance. Park Assist’s unique Find Your Car feature, created with the customer experience in mind, enables travelers to quickly locate their vehicle upon returning to the facility by entering all or part of their license plate number into a Park Assist kiosk or mobile app.

Park Assist’s Park Alerts and Park Surveillance software add-ons were designed to help increase control and security in the garage. The Park Alerts software extension allows parking management to set automated rules and alerts that help staff enforce policies and remain informed about parking abuse and policy violations within the garage, while Park Assist’s Park Surveillance module enables the M4 sensors to capture streaming video of any movement in or around parking bays. Because the M4 cameras have unobstructed views of each parking bay, as well as the space in between vehicles, they can successfully capture all action in the garage, serving as a proven deterrent of theft and other criminal behaviors.

“Nashville International Airport has been an incredible site for us as we continue to expand our projects in the airport sector and the Nashville market. This is our second major project with the airport and we are delighted to be a part of the BNA vision to help renovate its facility and deliver the best experience for all airport visitors,” said Thomas Alexander, National Channel Manager.

Partnering with GC Messer Construction, site installation is scheduled for completion by the end of June.

Reassessing Mobility Technology

Why do we spend so much money on business technology? We do so to help leverage our operations and improve business outcomes. These outcomes include our ability to deliver timely and accurate information—information that improves service outcomes but at the same time increases customer expectations.

Technology, like any product, is subject to the lifecycle effect. The product lifecycle is broken into four stages: development, growth, maturity, and decline. The process of strategizing ways to continuously support and maintain a product that avoids decline is called product lifecycle management. Within this management cycle exits the ability for competent management to extend and improve technology’s impact on their operation. When technology companies fail to understand or recognize where they are in that lifecycle realm, it often results in competitors or outside influencers jumping into the market and leaving them behind.

As a managing director of 12 various service departments, the ongoing assessing of various technologies is critical to delivering system performance that is essential to high-quality outcomes.

Within our parking organizations, parking leadership must constantly keep in mind the process of total quality management (TQM) and continuous quality improvement (CQI). Research within the marketplace to improve our condition, impose project discipline, and promote better communication through data and metrics is critical to performance excellence.

Amazon’s recent quarterly report significantly beat analysts’ expectations. The No. 1 factor the market cited was their switch to one-day service. The investment they made last year in managing their service lifecycle is now beginning to pay big dividends and once again challenging the marketplace for service dominance.

It’s very important that as parking professionals, we continuously engage with ourselves and our teams to understand what technologies in the market will improve our operation, especially when vendors are unresponsive. And, it’s important to not be afraid to make changes that improve our operation and our customers’ experience, even when it’s easier to continue with the status quo.
