Member News: Nashville’s Music City Center Selects Park Assist’s Parking Guidance System

ParkAssist Nashville's Music CityNASHVILLE, TN – June 10th, 2020 – Park Assist® has been awarded the Parking Guidance System (PGS) contract for Nashville’s Music City Center. This 2.1 million-square-foot convention complex opened in 2013 in the heart of downtown Nashville. The facility was primarily built to host large city-wide conventions. Attracting local and national events, Music City Center has continued to evolve while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and exceptional customer service.

With this evolution, came a significant rise in visitors as well as increased traffic and congestion in the parking facility. To accommodate this traffic, the Music City Center chose to implement Park Assist’s exclusive M4 smart-sensor system to elevate each customer’s parking journey and ensure that their outstanding experience starts in the garage.

Park Assist’s camera-based PGS uses color-coded smart-sensors to navigate parkers to the nearest available space, reducing parking search times while removing stress and uncertainty from the journey. In addition to this M4 technology, the Park Assist guidance system also includes exterior monument signs at the garage entrances and two of Park Assist’s select software extensions, Park Finder and Park Alerts.

Utilizing Park Assist’s License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, Park Finder ensures that the Music City Center’s visitors will be able to easily pinpoint their vehicles upon re-entering the garage. This technology, complemented by Park Assist’s mobile API access, enables returning parkers to find the exact location of their vehicles by entering their license plate number into the Find Your Car system. This advanced software system then directs the parker to the correct spot, optimizing the parking experience by minimizing wasted time and unnecessary frustration.

Music City Center will also use Park Assist’s Park Alerts module to enforce parking policies, increase garage productivity and security, and reduce compliance violations. Parking management will be able to establish and implement automated rules and alerts. If these rules are violated, Park Alerts will immediately notify management so they can promptly take the appropriate action.

The Music City Center installation is one of Park Assist’s first convention center projects in North America and its fifth major project in the Nashville area. Its other local sites include Nashville International Airport, Fifth and Broadway, Capitol View and 222 Second Ave.

“We are honored to work with Nashville Music City Center to help deliver a first-class parking experience for all guests and visitors at this bustling convention center.” Said Thomas Alexander, National Channel Manager, North America.

Park Assist was selected for this exciting opportunity due to its proven history of success, strong local presence, and ability to help accommodate the facility’s growth.

What’s the Answer, Part II

Diversity Management blogBy David Feehan

As I thought about my previous blog, I realized that there is much I wanted to say but did not. I raised the issue of diversity in the parking industry and even looked to our leadership at IPMI to ask if we were doing enough.

But having just concluded a town meeting sponsored by Leadership Montgomery, the leadership program where I live, I realized that my life journey has a bearing on how I view the issue of race, and I wanted to share some experiences with those of you in our profession.

I am a native of Minneapolis. I grew up in a racially mixed community in that city’s Northside, and became acquainted with discrimination at an early age. My best friend, who was African American, thought we should look for jobs in a neighboring business district. But when I proposed a day of cold calling on businesses, he told me he had tried that and been told by several proprietors, “we don’t hire n***rs here.” He told me without a letter of introduction from the Urban League, there was no way that he would endure that kind of humiliation again.

When we started college, I found a job at a major downtown financial firm. When I told my supervisor I had a friend who needed a job and was a college student, my supervisor told me that if my friend was Black, he could apply for a position as a janitor or on the loading dock. This company did not hire Black people in sales or management.

These were only a few of the examples of overt racism I witnessed as the years went by. Redlining was common in housing; discrimination in employment was frequent and almost expected. Black business owners were few and generally limited to barber shops, beauty salons, and bars.

Today, I am 75 years old. I have been married to a beautiful African American woman for 32 years. We have two biracial sons and four multiracial grandchildren. But the recent incidents involving murders of Black people, sometimes by police officers, leaves me searching for answers.

The parking industry has made great strides since I joined IPMI’s predecessor back in the 1990s. The board has become more diverse, and I know CEO Shawn Conrad has worked tirelessly to encourage a more diverse industry at all levels. But perhaps the incidents of the last few days have made us aware that the job is not finished. We have the talent and the courage as a vital industry to look once again at what we do and seek new ways to welcome people of color into our field. Perhaps a partnership with HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities) is worth exploring. I proposed that when I was president of the International Downtown Association, but it never came to fruition. Let’s put heads together and see what more we can do.

Member News: Westward’s GO-4 Vehicles Enhance Purdue University Parking Efficiencies While Reducing Fuel Costs by 65%

Purdue University recently obtained two GO-4 parking specific vehicles from Westward Industries. The GO-4 vehicles will support the university’s efforts to expand their mobility, transportation, and parking management operations, elevating their on-street and lot presence while increasing mobile reads within their mobile LPR systems.

Purdue University sought a solution to their parking enforcement needs as they continue to experience significant growth on campus. The University’s goals for introducing the vehicles to their fleet were efficiency, safety, and reliability, while achieving a return on investment not typically experienced with standard fleet vehicles. The GO-4’s unique design makes them highly maneuverable making them essential for patrolling beyond the pylons and in the parking decks.

According to Andy Pruitt, Purdue’s Parking Facilities Coordinator, “We recently added two GO-4s and have already recognized exceptional gains for our department. Apart from the approachable aspect, these GO-4 vehicles are highly efficient, saving our university 65% in fuel costs per month as compared to our other enforcement vehicles. The GO-4’s design aids in creating the desired environment; efficient, maneuverable, safe and different. I would highly recommend any of my colleagues to look into how these vehicles can fit into your operation”

He continued, “Purdue University strives to have its PEO’s be ambassadors for the University, exemplifying the Boiler Maker way. Westward’s GO-4 vehicles have been a valuable complement to the University’s parking operation and will continue to help its parking operation exceed its goals”.
