Online Shoptalk for Airports: COVID-19 and Our Industry’s Response

Dean Ahmad, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW),Assistant Vice President. In his role, Mr. Ahmad oversees parking operations, ground transportation, landside construction projects and strategic planning efforts. Mr. Ahmad currently serves as the Immediate Past President for the Texas Parking and Transportation Association (TPTA). In addition, he is a Board member for the Greater Dallas Planning Council (GDPC). Prior to his career at the airport, Dean was a successful entrepreneur in the furniture and antique industry. Mr. Ahmad earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Baylor University and is currently pursuing his MBA from Columbia Southern University.
David Wilson, CAPP, is the Transportation Business Manager for DFW Airport. He earned his BBA from the University of North Texas. He has 38 years parking and transportation experience including 8 years as the Parking Revenue and Yield Management Manager. He was involved with the implementation of DFW’s AVI system and NTTA partnership and the Prepay booking system. Dave has presented to multiple parking and transportation groups including IPMI and served as an ACRP Topic Panel member.

The California Public Parking Association (CPPA) in partnership with IPMI is hosting this presentation that will review the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 and various state efforts to protect the privacy of its citizens, including:
- An overview of common privacy threats and legal landscape: Shooting at a moving target
- The intersection of expanding customer expectations and legal obligations
- Discussion of what makes an information security/privacy program “defensible”?
- The ROI for investing time and resources in an information security/privacy program
- Effective strategizing for moving to the next level of cybersecurity and privacy protection
Objectives:
- Understand the changing legal landscape related to consumer privacy and the likely legal changes on the horizon;
- What efforts that they can engage in now to both prepare to meet their specific legal obligations and to implement information security/privacy program “best practices” in their organizations; and
- Which internal and external resources (e.g., data privacy officers, outside counsel, information security experts) can help them right-size their efforts regarding a fast changing area of the law.
Presenters:
Sue Friedburg is the co-chair of Buchanan’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Group. Sue advises clients about the rapidly evolving standards of care for safeguarding confidential information and responding effectively to security incidents that threaten to compromise our client’s valuable or protected information. Sue has extensive experience advising clients on the fast-changing world of consumer privacy laws at the federal and state level.
Robert Holland regularly advises clients from all business sectors on the impact of consumer privacy laws and legislation that continue to be a hot topic across the United States. Bringing his experience to businesses offering a variety of products and services, Rob helps them address the sometimes thorny implementation issues related to the laws. No two businesses are the same, and Rob brings that recognition to help each business craft a unique approach to protect their customers and their reputations.
Jason Wrona is a legal veteran to the parking industry, having served as counsel to a number of public and private parking operators and related businesses. Notably, Jason has served as the outside counsel to the Pittsburgh Parking Authority for more than 10 years. He has a deep understanding of all facets of the parking industry and is proud to be counted as a “parking nerd.”

The micro-mobility movement has exploded around the globe in the last three to five years. Government agencies woke up to find e-scooters and bikes dropped onto sidewalks for the general public to use. For the most part, the public has embraced this new form of transportation. However, agencies have been challenged to find the balance between safety, sustainability, street clutter, and revenue generation.
If your agency is weighing different micro-mobility options, which one or ones do you choose? Have you figured out how many units to allow per vendor? Who’s responsible when the units are left in prohibited areas? How do you access the data from each vendor? Is the data valuable for your operations? What do you do with the data when you get your hands on it?
Various studies claim more than 60 percent of 0- to 5-mile trips are taken via micro-mobility options. This mode of transportation adds to the options from which the public can choose. It can even bridge gaps in areas where traditional transport modes may be lacking, such as government-run bus routes.

Next Wednesday, I’ll have the pleasure of presenting an IPMI webinar: Supporting Mobility In An Open Environment. Mobility is a rapidly evolving discipline within the urban planning and parking fields, and I hope to inspire a conversation about how we can do a better job of promoting it in a way that fully benefits everyone.
When it comes to mobility, the future has already arrived. You just need to know where to look. Parking and transportation professionals around the globe are seeking new ways to promote mobility and apply planning approaches and new technologies to their mobility challenges. We can learn much by looking to the experiences of experts, planners, and parking professionals in other parts of the world—the challenges they face and the strategies and tools they are using to overcome those challenges.
How do we apply technology to help people get to their destinations more freely and conveniently? What are the most exciting technologies, particularly apps, for promoting mobility? How do we make these technologies integral to the lives of commuters and travelers, without risking app fatigue or burnout? These are all questions that are being grappled with around the globe, and many communities and parking organizations have come up with some pretty good ideas. What can we learn from parking professionals in other parts of the world who have addressed these very issues?
